Democrats: Flippity Floppity

Democrats PSD
Well this is entirely understandable, seeing how few pictures of Hillary Clinton there are in existence.

Wow... I like Obama's new look :D

Wow! How hard is it to get a normal pic her face? Do they have to cut her face in half and use one half to make a whole face? WTF?

flmumb said...

@ first poster

the pin is for ex-hillary supporters who now support obama. the disaster is the reflector of half her face onto itself. (theres a better way to say that, but i dont know how)

Countervail said...

I didn't know Mrs. Brady was running for office.

Keith said...

Rather have this than real Hillary, tbh.

Lara said...

It's a quote from a Hillary speech. Since there are no doubt lots of people who didn't see it, they should put some quotation marks around it.

Lord Ebon said...

Well... instead of trying to find a pic of her entire face (which would be, like work or something) they just mirrored the one half onto the other....

Symmetry can be beautiful, but that only count's when it's real...

David said...

There are some important differences between the two halves of her face that suggest this isn't a reflection. Go to the site and click on the larger image.

The shadow under her left ear is not repeated under her right. The shadow under the point of her nose is not symmetrical, nor is the shadow running down her nose. There's a very obvious line over her right eye that isn't over her left. She's got a bit of snot up her right nostril. There's more white on the inside of her right eye than there is on the inside of her left.

Then again, those teeth! That mouth! That little tiny spot just between her eye and her nose on both sides! Was she caught unluckily here, with remarkably (though not perfectly) even lighting, square on to the camera? Did the 'shopper make a half-ass attempt to conceal his crime in some places, and very good attempts in others? Or is Hillary a freak?

David said...

... or were the 'shoppers Gilbert and George?

Emily said...

David @ 3:55, all of those things could have been "fixed" in Photoshop. The giveaways are the things that ARE the same, including the fact that her head appears to be triangular.

I think it's pretty evident that the "designer" wanted her to be lit on both sides/underneath, but this was a very, very, very bad choice.

Lindsey said...

And what's with the shadow in a straight line up her nose? If they wanted her whole face to be light they should have eliminated that.

By doing this they made her look older and freakier than normal.

David said...

Her face is a normal oval when you allow for the fact that they've lit her chin out of existence.

My point was not that it's not reflection - the lines in the hair of her bangs are so perfectly symmetrical to be anything else. It's that they've taken care to change some things (didn't I say this?), and reasonably well (changing the whites of her eyes without leaving her looking in different directions is tough), while other things look like they were done by a trained pigeon. And it's weird, because the nose appears, to me, not to be shopped at all. Eyebrows definitely, that creepy mouth, teeth, jowls and chin, but if the nose was reflected then shopped, and quite well, why is the rest of the image so crappy?

Of course all this is moot, when you come back to the usual question, Why not just use a normal picture of Hillary...

W Rand said...

Definitely not mirrored. I brought the image into Photoshop, copied and mirrored half the face and there are many differences (eye focus, size of the face, lighting, etc.) I think the photo just looks too evenly lit on each side of the face.

Bonnie said...

With a forehead like that, this button is clearly aimed at the Klingon demographic.

Luke said...

Look at the hair, they obviously had a full picture, but something was wrong with that one side. They didn't completely flip the entire image, just the face.

Simon Proffitt said...

Definitely not mirrored

Well, have a look at this:
Exhibit A - animation of the image being flipped. Done very quickly, so not lined up pixel-perfect. But still, it's obvious to me that what's happened is that half of Hillary's face has been reflected, and then a few photoshop splashes have been added on top to make it look like it's real. Look closely at the mouth, and the eyes (but not the pupils!). The nose has been shaded post-flip, as has the neck, and the eyes have been moved a bit.

Exhibit B: the difference between the two. Image flipped, layered on top and subtracted. Black areas mean that both pixels at that location are the same. It's pretty easy to see that most of the left side of the lower face is exactly the same as most of the right side. Few people are that symmetrical in real life.

The real question, of course, is WHY THE HELL GO TO ALL THAT TROUBLE??

@Simon Proffitt

The latter of the two images there is amazing.

Like, a Satanic political button.

Or a movie poster.

About demons!

Just to let you know: people always email me to say they like the blog, but you guys are the ones who make it all worthwhile.

Amazing analysis!

gracky said...

from the flip-flop animation linked above, it's quite obvious that it's a reflection.
look at the eyebrows, laugh lines, and mouth in particular - they match up exactly.

Does anyone know where we can find the original image they used to make the mirrored freak we see before us? I for one want to see why the made the choice to do it this way instead of either
1) using the image as is, or
2) using another image of her.

I also find the quote to be confusing for anyone who didn't see the speech in which she made that statement. Not necessarily a disaster, but still very confusing for most of the viewers wondering why a design supporting Obama has an image of Hillary.

mxq said...

she looks more like claire mccaskill....

curvature said...

I had a token search for the original but couldn't see it, but I notice that in many of the images where she's really getting into her speech, there are microphones or hands or confetti or whatever overlapping her face.

Maybe they mirrored her to remove someting that was in the way, but they wanted her to look like she was really serious about what she was saying?

Anthony Woodward said...

I almost thought it was mirrored too...

What I think is that they've tried to add a mysterious shadow to the middle of the face which has made it look mirrored. Plus the have gotten rid of many wrinkles which makes the face loose definition. Also the neck has been shrunk.

Obama is suddenly suffering the same "sickness" that caused Michael Jackson's skin to turn white, right?

All she wants for Christmas is two front teeth.

Exhibit B is pretty much the coolest thing ever.

Simon Proffitt kicks butt over the boundary fence!

Camilla said...

Did Hillary have an acid/fire accident that somehow transformed her into Two-Face? It's the only reason I can find for this reflection.

jedit said...

@simon proffitt: that second image would make a really cool album cover.

Ben said...

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the.... oh you know the rest

Russ said...

Simon Proffitt's second image kinda, just slightly, sorta a little bit screams Goatse.

Sorry, can't unsee, I know.

Sigh.

Simon Proffitt said...

Ha ha, yeah, I was going to mention Goatse, but couldn't bring myself to do it. Hillary + Goatse = a whole new kind of nasty.

Maybe best to try and convince yourself she's simply stretching her own face off.

Kimizzy said...

Proffitt... amazing images. Especially Exhibit B. I love the image itself too. Exhibit A also helps see what's the same/different. Thanks for showing us that!

Her neck is freakishly skinny. She looks like she should be standing on someone's dash.

Thiago Silva said...

So if you get half of Hillary's face, mirror it, then reverse the image and subtract from one another, you get an image of the face of satan and the seventh seal of hell...I knew it! Just like playing vinyl records backwards!

Someone, call Constantine, now!

i think it's a photo? albeit a very harshly lit one

but look at the lighting, and now imagine some more degrees between the flashes and the camera.

Russell said...

Oh man...awesome! I check this site every day, and now I can say that I know someone who has done something disaster-worthy. Democraticstuff.com is my company. My man Sean, my fellow designer, had to come up with a button after Hillary's speech at the DNC. We wanted to use a pic of her actually speaking there, so the best we could get (and mind you, there actually aren't a lot of GOOD pics of Hillary out there) was a half pic. We had about 15 minutes to get it done and this was up on some AP site so we took it. I remember the conversation we had about it...I believe I used the word "frightening." But its what we had. I guess we never went back and fixed it. I kind of like how freaky it is. It looks like a zombie-running-for-office movie poster.

Anyway, awesome. I think we do some good stuff, but really...I am totally giving Sean the business for this one as I write this (he sits next to me in the office and is blushing). Thanks for the comments.

yazzydream said...

You know for some reason I didn't know Obama looked like a middle aged white woman.

Carolyn said...

I agree with everyone! Well, kinda. The top half of her face is NOT mirrored, but her mouth IS, and you can tell this pretty easily from the shape, matching laugh lines and in the large image, the exceptionally wide front teeth the woman apparently has. I'd go with whoever said part of her face was obscured in the original, and they've tried to cover it by flipping the mouth,

Rodrigo said...

it's obviously for former clinton supporters who now support obama
