Looks pretty intentional. Because of the context he is sleeping on a plane AND giving the service two thumbs up. Don't think this was an error but an intent.
Like Jason, I would like to amend my previous comment. I still think it's Zaphod, but of course Zaphod is a disaster.
Jason, I'm agog to hear how Zaphod managed to fall asleep on that guy's left arm while he was sitting on the right. Based on that fact and the clothing, it's more likely (in the case I have misidentified the sleeper) that someone stuck a hand between the seats in eagerness to express approval.
It looks like one of those gags where someone right behind you is putting his arms out in front of you to make a gesture or make it look like you have four arms. I think they're doing that because the dude is asleep. Still, not sure of someone in the seat behind Rip Van Winkle could fit his arms up there
This is not a disaster! That man is a classic example of the evolution of the human race. Before you know it, three arms will standard issue. We'll be able to blog and drink coffee at the same time! Or hold a baby and write a check!
The people saying this isn't a disaster aren't serious, are they? Jason, there are two left hands there so if he fell asleep on the other guy's arm, the other guy has a left hand on his right arm. In which case there is still a disaster somewhere, though not necessarily of the photoshop type.
The brand's logo is two thumbs up (see "good" in "good stuff", so the joke is that he's giving a thumbs up while still being asleep and propping up his head. It's an obvious and intentional sight gag. Kind of like the extra hand in this commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEY-ArI-qMQ
It's supposed to be someone behind him putting their two thumbs up under his arms, but the black shirt and angles and stuff made this a very controversial execution. Still a disaster.
Wow, people think this is a disaster? It's not hard to see what's going on. It's just as Jason and Betty pointed out. Did you not also realize the right arm of the guy who's sleeping is down to the side of the chair? The thumbs up have nothing to do with the guy beside him, either.
He's just happy with the service, and it's a thumbs up to show that. He's sleeping because the service wasn't shit and he isn't worried about paying a lot, thus he is able to sleep and be relaxed.
Obviously not a very good advertisement if 95% of you couldn't figure it out - still, that says more about you than the advertisers.
I don't get it. What's all this left/right kerfuffle? It's got nothing to do with the arm of the person sitting next to him (as has already been said).
Surely Julie was right when she said, "It looks like one of those gags where someone right behind you is putting his arms out in front of you to make a gesture or make it look like you have four arms. I think they're doing that because the dude is asleep."
It makes no sense but I might, for the first time, proclaim no PSD.
Its completely intentional. even the other arm is obviously comming from the armpit. someone's is behind him, putting his arms through the sleeping guy armpits so it looks like they were his arms.
maybe there is an obvious point in the extra hands lighting.
Did any of you besides Keera Ann Fox visit the site? It's a promotion where you count thumbs.
You all assume it's a disaster because it's not what you expect to see. But in context it makes perfect sense. Right and left thumbs are irrelevant. And this site is increasingly becoming so as well.
Aha...the "count thumbs" promotion is only on the UK side of the side. If you click through to the US side, there's no such promotion.
I can see npw that it's supposed to be the guy sitting behind him, and could in fact not involve any PS other than the usual adjustment of levels, etc.
But, as Sossamonster said, "Obviously not a very good advertisement if 95% of you couldn't figure it out - still, that says more about you than the advertisers."
Actually, no, it's the advertisers job to get a strong point across quickly -- not the viewers job to figure out confusing ads. If 95% of viewers miss the point, then the advertiser has failed miserably.
it's not that the advertisers have failed, it's that the perspective of the PSD audience is dramatically skewed from the average audience, due to our interest here.
I just showed the picture to some relations, and they appear to not be confused at all on the origin of the hands.
They were interested in what it was promoting too, which I guess is a thumbs up for the advertisers.
It is totally intentional, if somewhat stupid. Maybe before calling something a disaster the ad campaign in question should be checked out (as I did) the whole campaign is people traveling on vacation and giving two thumbs up. evidently the sleeping man is so impressed with lastminute.com that he can still give the two thumbs up. It is a bad image but totally intended as a humorous play on the ad campaign. More research guys?
this is not a disaster, my uncle totally has an extra pair of hands growing out of his armpits every time he falls asleep on a plane and 95% of people see nothing wrong with it and he does it INTENTIONAL.
This IS a disaster, guys! Unless the guy on the right has a 'left hand' attached to his right arm (or there is a mysterious invisible 3rd person with a single visible hand - or an Adams Family type of character) then it's photoshopped. If this was the striped shirt guy's hand then it would have to be the other way around...
i think that those aren't his arms. they're the chairs or something. his right arm is not bent. he's sleeping and the other arms are coming through his armpits. Bad design yes. photoshop disaster no.
I got what they were doing, thumbs up despite being asleep but they did do it wrong by having a sleeve on the left hand and no sleeve on the right one.
The sleeping person doesn't have two right hands. He's asleep on an aircraft, with the person seated behind him thrusting his hands forward between the seats to give the thumbs up.
I love this blog, as a designer it's nice to find some topical humour. And normally I hate the 'this isn't a fail crowd' as much as most people... especially when its because its subtle, or because they have no design background and have only ever used PS for saving off screenshots and have no idea of the workings of the software or more importantly the medium for which it is used.
However ...
This is a FAIL, in a series of FAILS recently on this blog. I'd rather see less PSDs than ones that arnt even PSDs, cause its getting a bit lame.
I guess you could argue that this is an intentional PSD, but by definition if it's intentional then its not a PSD ...
Blog author person ... next time make the effort to at least look at the source and gather the context of the image before declaring its failures. This is perhaps a marketing disaster (due to the confusion caused by the image), but definately not not a PSD, perhaps you could start a side blog, MSD.
There are plenty enough disasters out there to not post fails on your part.
However this is your blog and you may post what you wish, however for the benefit of the community, I would advise you please raise your standards :)
I'm not going to argue that there's someone behind him as there's NO EVIDENCE for that. But yes, I believe they put in a third arm as an advertising joke.
So now, for the first time EVER (unlike most of you cynical morons) no disaster.
Actually, I'm gonna still give Photoshop Disaster credit for this, because look at the offending arm (the one with the thumb) it's too short to be coming out of that body i feel like.
Lastminute.com actually press-released this. They ran a competition to win a holiday if you spotted the number of thumbs during a series of ad breaks on UK TV a couple of weeks ago:
OMG how is this not a disaster? If it's the arm of the guy sitting behind the sleeping dude, then it's LEFT hand on his RIGHT arm! Not only that, but the guy in back is BLACK!
I also think it is supposed to be the hand of the fellow passenger. However...not only is that passenger dark, while his hand is white. His hand is also reversed.

That's pretty funny... how can anyone miss that before sending it out?!?!
That's not a disaster, that's Zaphod Beeblebrox.
Looks pretty intentional. Because of the context he is sleeping on a plane AND giving the service two thumbs up. Don't think this was an error but an intent.
Yeah I think it's not a mistake; he fell asleep on that other guy's arm.

Jason... "he fell asleep on that other guy's arm".
Take a look at the extra hand. Then look at "that other guy's" face.
This is how Photoshop Disasters happen, people.
The people saying this isn't a disaster aren't serious, are they? Jason, there are two left hands there so if he fell asleep on the other guy's arm, the other guy has a left hand on his right arm. In which case there is still a disaster somewhere, though not necessarily of the photoshop type.

i give this picture thre thumbs up!

For the record, I suspect it's "intentional".
But it's shite if no-one can work out what the intention was supposed to be.
If it's intentional it's even more of a disaster!
@Elizabeth: Thumbs up (three) for the Zaphod ref
I think it was intentional... but they messed up by PS'ing in a left hand where a right hand would be correct.
If nothing else, it's ridiculously confusing.
It's someone sticking their arms under sleeping guy's armpits from behind - in the row behind him. Pretty sure it's just meant to be funny.
not a disaster.
Nope, not a disaster. The chap sitting beside him has nothing to do with the hands that are showing.
The thumbs up are both coming from the passenger sitting behind him.
Wow, people think this is a disaster? It's not hard to see what's going on. It's just as Jason and Betty pointed out. Did you not also realize the right arm of the guy who's sleeping is down to the side of the chair? The thumbs up have nothing to do with the guy beside him, either.

If it was supposed to show a man behind putting his two thumbs up through a seat and then under his arms then no, no PSD..
If the guy is supposed to be showing thumbs up from two of his own extra arms. It's still a PSD even Z Beeblebroxes third arm was more convincing.
it's a top secret flight. The guy behind is giving you the thumbs up because everyone is asleep and not noticing him.
That "top secret flight" is the key to understanding what's going on there.
it's not a PSD.
They're actually experimental airplane seat arms, currently only available in "right". Great for holding your drinks, too.
All one had to do was go to the ad's website and discover that they're having a campaign where you're supposed to - wait for it - count thumbs!
Please do better, PSD!
I don't get it. What's all this left/right kerfuffle? It's got nothing to do with the arm of the person sitting next to him (as has already been said).

Bad Cosmo7, no chocolate fish for you tonight!

Looks like that bit where one guy sticks his arms out from behind someone else and hilarity ensues.
As if to say the happy client is mooching off a regular passenger's wastefulness.
Maybe it made sense in color and before the cropping.
Maybe it's magic.
The concept may be cryptic, but I don't see any PSD.
Those who claim that those who claim that there was no PSD couldn't be serious may please explain what they think is the PSD.
Now that's a sentence.

WTF i care if it was intensional, it still a bad design, so it still makes a disaster.
Very eloquently put, JitD.
this is not a disaster, my uncle totally has an extra pair of hands growing out of his armpits every time he falls asleep on a plane and 95% of people see nothing wrong with it and he does it INTENTIONAL.
Nah! This shot is taken in New York and his head is resting on some kind of art.
This funny picture site fails serious analysis yet again!
We're not fooled by your so called attempts to make us laugh (puts on most serious pouty face)

"and he does it INTENTIONAL"
But not intentionally?

BTW, Alison, I'm afraid you didn't get it yet. Have you read the previous comments at all?

Like a lot of people here, I think this is intentional. The campaign is really terrible and I think this is an attempt at humour...
Not a disaster he is just this guys brother.
http://www.momofreaksout.com/media/2/20070712-photos_jake3_lrg.jpg
Sadly, this one's intentional, the person on the seat behind obviously has their hands under the sleeping guy's arms to give the 2 thumbs up.
Not really a disaster, and quite obvious given that their logo/theme, whatever, is thumbs.
I like the way the thumbs up in the word 'good' make them look like boobies.
That's probably an PhotoshopLogo intentional disaster too.
PSD : Win Win Win
I'm not going to argue that there's someone behind him as there's NO EVIDENCE for that. But yes, I believe they put in a third arm as an advertising joke.

I count four arms (not including stripey shirt man), not three.
Lastminute.com TV advert just came on, full of scenes of people putting their arms through others and doing thumbs up.
So pretty much exactly as those of us with two eyes have said then.
Actually, I'm gonna still give Photoshop Disaster credit for this, because look at the offending arm (the one with the thumb) it's too short to be coming out of that body i feel like.
i think there is a guy in the seat behind putting his hands under the sleeping mans arms
