I'm with David, there is no disaster here, peoples.
Her hand is just ankwardly reversed and grabbed, but there is nothing else. There is no Photoshop in a very long finger, just three fingers from her hand superimposed.
People want to see many fingers and strange things, but it's again ALL IN YOUR IMAGINATION.
And for those who see a 4-joints index finger, please look carefully: it's not the index finger, but the ring finger over the middle finger over the index finger.
Things like this should not be tagged with the hatefulness inherent with the "Ralph Lauren" name: She isn't emaciated/bulemic, she is not wearing a pissed-off face (American meaning), and she has on well-designed clothing.
She MAY be backed up by a lawyer, though. That can happen to anyone.

I went and looked up other photos of this woman just to make sure she didn't really have a prosthetic hand that was mostly empty rubber. 'Cause, you know, making fun of that would just be mean.
David is right, I dont' think this is a photoshop disaster, i just pretty much copied this pose in the mirror. put both hands on top of each other in front of you with your knuckles out. then rotate the hand closest too you around so that your thumb basses your torso and your pinky passes your outer hand. thread your fingers and you get this pic. it looks weird but it's humanly possible.
There is no physical way to have your left hand oriented with the palm facing the body and the thumb towards the left side of the body.

The fingers are awesome, but that's not the end of the problems in this photo - although it's blocked a bit by the "D" in "scandalous," it looks as though her arm is a boneless tentacle that tapers at the wrist to about the diameter of a bratwurst.
this is not a disaster. it's just an awkward hand pose...which technically..is still a mistake for whoever picked this magazine cover..but it IS physically possible if you really look at it. plus, there's no real reason they would need to photoshop hands in the middle of a cover photo...if they cared enough to do that i'm sure they would make them look more normal.

I managed to do something similar to that, but something does seem quite wrong with that picture and it looks like someone stretched out some of her fingers LOL
I can get my hands almost into the same pose, but I would have to move my thumb to the other side of my hand to perfectly recreate this.
Can't think what they must have been trying to do - maybe she had something in her hand in the original shot that they decided to remove?
For those of you claiming that this is physically impossible, I don't think you're seeing the hands correctly. Her left hand is beneath her right hand, with the palm facing away from her body. Her right hand is on top of her left, with the palm facing toward her body. The pose is somewhat unnatural, but it's certainly physically possible.
Nonetheless, this definitely qualifies as a PSD because all magazine covers are 'shopped, and the "artist" should have done something with the hands.
For those who say this can't be done, it can, as long as you are somewhat flexible. If you want to recreate it here are the instructions.
hold both hand out in front of you, palm down.
Twist you right hand so the thumb is facing out. This is going to be tricky, because you are going to do it in the opposite direction you would normally do it.
Then take you left hand and clasp you right hand.
Yes, it requires a little stretching. I do it all the time when I'm nervous. I'm sure she was nervous in front of the camera.
So there you have it. No photoshop disaster. Maybe a poor editorial decision, but not a disaster.

She's got longer fingers than me, and her ring finger is on top of her middle finger, making the fingernail on the ring finger look like an extra knuckle on one freakishly long ET-finger. Her thumb also looks like melting rubber, but it's perfectly real; just odd perspective and lighting.
It's ugly, but real.

I agree with the several people that think this isn't a photoshop disaster. It might be a bad choice for your cover image because it's awkward. But there are no extra fingers in there.
I've replicated this with my own hands but the MAJOR difference is that *MY* pinkies aren't freakishly long. The pinkie finger and ring finger aren't supposed to be the same length, people.
The illusion of a PsD is due to the visibility of the nails of the lower hand, this suggests that hand is palm down. It is in fact palm up towards us. The ring finger merging with the middle finger adds to the illusion. As does the visibility of the small amount of palm bellow her left thumb making it difficult to judge where the palm stops and the thumb starts.

I am definitely in favor of using Ralph Lauren as a PSD verb.
The positioning of the hands is possible and does add to the weirdness. Poor choice of pose on the photographers part and poor choice of final cover photo by editor.
But there's definitely still some PsD going on - the fingers on the back hand (despite the illusion of two fingers merging and looking like one freakishly long one) are longer than the fingers on the hand in front. Plus, the thumb is definitely doing some kind of rubbery, bendy thing and appears to have no knuckles. The front hand in general looks plasticy and fake. I've done the hand position myself and although it looks awkward and weird, it's nowhere near as freaky and unrealistic as this.
I never call "not disaster," but I'm half inclined to do so in this case, as many other folks have. Her pose is indeed awkward, but to my understanding, the placement of her hands is correct.
If only you guys could have seen me as I tried to figure this one out, though. I had my arms tied in knots trying to replicate what she was doing. If anything, this might be a photography disaster... Perhaps the photographer shouldn't have posed the model so awkwardly.

Um, her hands aren't photoshopped. Left hand is by her body, palm outward, thumb on left. Right hand is away from body, palm inward, thumb on left. Fingers intertwined. No photoshopping. It is an odd pose, and the title over it makes it confusing, but it is anatomically correct.

Point is, Ralph are known for butchering their models. Precedent suggests it's right to be suspicious.
i love when people who've never touched photoshop say, adamantly, that a picture has no 'shopping to it at all. if it's on a cover, it has had some adjusting to it. usually major adjusting.
and while this hand position is physically possible, the arm position along with the hand position is NOT possible and has been shopped together for some reason.
try it for yourself. put your hands in this position and take a look at your left arm. the inside of your elbow is facing the viewer, not the outside like this picture shows.
so, it turns out that both sides are sort of right!
The hands are fine; if she was wearing better nail polish, you would see they are ok. Her hair and face are awfully overdone in Photoshop though.
Sigh. Yes, obviously, they've touched this picture up with PS, as they would *any* picture. But they didn't manipulate the hands. I have no problem putting my own arms/hands into exactly the pose that the model has here.
Total FAIL. Sorry. Admit it and move on.
Okay, how about this. Take a look at the PINKY FINGER of the hand with the palm facing outward. The finger on the far right. The one that has no joints, but rather curvers outward. The one that gets thicker towards the end. The one that look slike a melted spoon.
THAT is the disaster.
