You'd think someone would notice this before it got put up in a shop.
Guess not...

But without those people we'd have no mistakes to point and laugh at :)

How the fuck did they not notice...

Violet Parks said...

omig-d - CLASSIC!

I've worked as a copywriter for years and have always been amused by designers' 'latin' dummy copy on visuals.....
but HOW would this make it to print, let alone have the proof approved, let alone the printer not notice, let alone the shop workers not notice?!?!?!!?!!!

Fitz said...

Maybe Globe's newest product is called Lorem Ipsum.

Andrew A. Gill said...

That has to be on purpose.

I'm not sure why they want to do that, but that cannot be an accident.

Otto said...

wonder how many people look at this and think "i wonder what lorem ipsum is" ;-)

total fail.. on a massive scale no less..

N. said...

LOL, love it; I can't even imagine the amount of incompetence involved in that reaching a billboard ... and funnily enough the only person probably not to blame is the designer themselves.

How many times must producers and clients learn to not push forward concept work containing stock-site watermarks and lipsum!

Andrew A. Gill said...

The other thing is that Lorem Ipsum is used to emulate letter frequency in English, but when you simply repeat the first two words over and over again, it fails to come even close.

N. said...

@Violet Parks

I'm not sure what's amusing about it; it's so we can generate a layout without the need for copy (www.lipsum.com), also if you try and write garbage (mashing your keyboard) it doesn't look like copy, it looks like garbage and so serves no purpose; and unless it's only a few words takes longer than copy pasting some latin. Using your native language isn't good either, unless it's the real copy, as certain words can have dramatic effects on a design, not from a layout POV, but visually you're drawn to certain words, like you're drawn to skin.

As a copyrighter working with creatives I'd of assumed you'd know this.

We all know the reasons for dummy text. It´s still funny to read.

Now I´m wondering, can you be a designer and have no sense of humor?

I don't suppose the printers nor the sign hangers bother reading any of the stuff they hang. As long as the colors are aligned and the poster is level, they did their job.

It's also likely that several of the people involved don't speak English, so they wouldn't even try to read the material.

If it's approved, you get the job done on time or else. Not much room for questions.

I agree it is not an accident of technique. It's an accident of effete intellectual insider humor. Think on this: what sort of person would think lipsum was funny. In any way.

Then the disaster happened: management bought it.

Bonnie said...

Is it wrong that once I recognized the text as Latin I assumed that the people behind the text were holding wands...and therefore (just for a second, mind) thought it was a Harry Potter ad?

Anon said...

I'm afraid this isn't a Photoshop Disaster. This photo was taken at a mall where a new shop was opening. As shops usually need to add fixtures and fittings before opening, something needs to be put over the front of the shop. Often companies put their logo or some lifestyle photography and a bit of text to say "opening soon!".

In this case, Globe were quite clever. They used placeholder text as a placeholder for their new shop. Perhaps it wasn't the best idea since a lot of people would not understand the text, and those that do cannot understand why it was used and think it was a mistake.

Ronsonic said...

@N. by "I'd of" I'm going to guess you meant "I'd have". As a person speaking in English, I'd think you'd know that.

Lisa said...

Well, I read through all the comments and still didn't know what the disaster was, but finally figured it had something to do with the words...so I googled and now I understand. I don't believe your average person knows this.

Terzeus said...

wow. just wow. even if it's not really a psD, it's still hilarious. also, does the shop beside look like cd-r king?

Simulated Person said...

The suggestion that blank adspace would be wasted with Lorem Ipsum rather than some corporate guff is massively improbable.

Why not use the usual bland copywriter filler text: "New opportunities coming soon!"
or "Globe - making the world a better place". That's the very usual approach.

You think that Lorem Ipsum would ever be approved over that?
Nah. This was not intentional.

Bryan said...

I much prefer the Klingon over the Latin. More people will understand the meaning of your statement.

Dejpu'bogh Hov rur qablli!

What a bizarre comment.

Also - watch your grammar, otherwise copywriters like me will get offended chum!

Catanea said...

@N ...
"as a copyrighter" - what's a "copyrighter"? Are you claiming to be a copywriter? Not very effectively, I'm afraid...
And you (the non-copywriter) think "lorem ipsum" IS Latin? Sorry. It's not....
And "as a copyrighter" you'd OF assumed...
I'd've assumed you failed high school english.
Mm.
I do see goojafrooja caught some of this.

Stevo said...

InDesign Disaster?

Plus, *tsk tsk*, terrible use of Lorem Ipsum.

Yakov said...

@Stevo

Quark. An InDesign person would use "fill placeholder text" in which case he/she wouldn't need to copy/paste the same lorem ipsum three times.

@All
NOBODY "let this out". Designer was promised but never given a line of copy. Because he's a freelancer he could not take the decision to miss deadline. Because this is the first time he works with Globe AND he was being had, he sent it like that to the printer. There was nobody to "approve" this job.

Silvia said...

sorry, I do not understand it!

DanH said...

Designers often call "Lorem Ipsum" "latin" for short - no it's not genuine latin... go to that lipsum.com site for the full story if you don't know it.

I'm going to put my hand up again and say I don't mind if some non-photoshop disasters are in this blog as long as they're generally in the realm of design/retouching/artworking fails. That's my opinion.

I assumed the mistake was that people at different distances from the camera were all touching the same hanging paperclip family... either way, the ad is funny.

Hans said...

Okay, so here's what happened: the client calls the agency and says "We have this space booked we've totally forgotten about, we need to fill it NOW. Help!!"

The agency cobbles something together in five minutes (easy, since they've worked with this client for years), sends the design draft with dummy text to the client, follwed by the copy in a separate mail slightly later, since the copywriter was in a meeting during the five minutes in question.

The client okays the draft + copy, the AD inserts the real copy and saves the file with a file name that's only slightly different from the name of the draft file. Then proceeds to send off the wrong file to the printers, since he's late for a meeting and really doesn't have time for this anyway.

At the printers, no one reads the copy. They never do. Or if they do, they've given up on trying to understand what these weird agency freaks are on about ages ago anyway. And, since there's no time, neither the agency or the client check the finished article. Instead, it goes straight to the outdoor media company, where the poster is hung by someone who hardly speaks English anyway.

In short: shit happens. But, I might add, seldom with such admirable consistency and spectacular results as here.

lipsum is funny like test card F is funny here in England. It's a nod to something a bit odd, antiquated and idiosyncratic, rather than keyboard 'mash'
I've always liked the rumour that extras chant 'rhubarb' over and over in long shot scenes rather than making converstaion, because it has a nice consonant formation that looks like you're talking

Copyrighting and copy-writing are different, and N you seem to fighting yourself here? have you no good humoured affection for the quirks of your trade? How odd!

Globe is a telecommunications company from the Philippines, and the ad features people from all over the world.

Could the Lorem ipsum headline be a failed attempt at cleverness and not an unnoticed mistake?

Message being - "no matter where you're from or what language you speak, Globe will keep you connected."

Far fetched, I know. But maybe not as far fetched as no one noticing the mistake.
