Banana Republic: Gray Test Patience

Banana Republic PSD
This season we're looking at cool, solid colors in knits and we're emphasizing comfort. The must-have accessory is the photographer's gray card, which you can inexplicably hold above your head.

What was the proof person thinking? "Oh that must be a fabric sample she's holding there, interesting idea!"

*sigh*....and these are supposed to be professionals?

This, IMHO, has nothing to do with a PsD, it's just a slightly odd photo, which they just went with cause it's not that bad. Come on. This is more like PsD-D. :|

Mrs said...

I'm with the sequence of numbers over there - what makes this bad is not the Photoshop - it's just the wrong picture to use for publication.

waldobaby said...

Exactly. There are SO many things that could have been shopped in to replace the card. P S Omission.

Yep. Like an extra leg or hand.

I think it was done on purpose, because if you go to their website, the next picture is this...

"the next picture is this..."
That's true although I can't see a general trend across all the pictures that would make a campaign idea.

Pedants will also be glad to hear the site is changing name to PhotoshopCS5OnaMacOnTuedaysOnly.com for the accuracy they desire.

It's not a Photoshop disaster, it's a Lightroom disaster. But the blog isn't named Lightroom Disasters, so I guess they gotta go with what they know.

If she were instead holding a mirror with an unrealistic reflection of a half invisible lamp, NOW THAT would have been something to type about!

Thank goodness that there are still commentators on this forum who care enough to point out which posts are real Photoshop Disasters, the genuine article, and which of them are either a disaster made by a different type of software or are not disastrous enough to be included here.

This blog would be much the poorer without them.

Laurence said...

There are at least 8 photos with cards in them:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

I think Banana Republic just trolled PsD.

The comments are still amusing like hell :D

I don't get the card thing, what is it supposed to be? As an outsider who's just seen this, i'm a bit lost as to what they were trying to achieve with the GREY (uk) piece of card. It looks more like a void to me, like something else was meant to be there instead. I don't really care if this isn't technicaly a photoshop disaster, i'm not totally pedantic when it comes to that sort of thing. Clearly 111053533016229875900 isn't so laid back when it comes to definitions, here's one for you mate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedant

j said...

IM with the numbers on this one tho, its clearly had little or no Photoshoping done to it at all, so why is it on PSD? Its not being pedantic, its being confused.com

GREAT! Now I am going to feel pedantic all day.

(I hate when that happens.)

The name of the blog happens to be Photoshop Disasters, which is a nice clear general name - but that doesn't mean every single post has to involve Photoshop specifically, anymore than boingboing.net has exclusively to feature things that go BOING _and_ BOING.

Maybe it's a Gimp error, or Illustrator, or failure to remove the lorem ipsum or the ©GETTY placeholder pic and put the real thing in instead - but All-Purpose All-Source Professionally-Published Digital Environment Visual Image Manipulation Errors Tracking Website is less zingy than Photoshop Disasters. So relax!

Jonny Dade said...

Oh don't worry i'm pretty pedantic myself, i just love to tell other people that they are as well. I think we all are when it comes to something or other. I always correct people on their pronunciation of words, to their annoyance. lol

doka said...

GREAT! Now I am going to feel annoyed all day.

Nirmala said...

Agreed, Armitaj. The site has clearly expanded its focus but kept the "photoshopdisasters.blogspot.com" address. So what? All the sticklers might want to agree on a new site name, register that new name with Blogger, then return here and report the good news. Or they might want to relax and enjoy the site. We're not paying for our subscriptions, after all.

Granny 's granddaughter does that!

Not a Photoshop disaster. The person who put together the website chose a gray card photo by mistake.

Claude said...

According to Laurence (above), they left a card in at least 8 different times.

Oh, well. Maybe they were going for a "balanced" look.

@ Nirmala: what the heck: you're not paying for your subscription here? Get with it! No wonder the prices have gone up last year ...

agress said...

Even if it was at one point a gray card, it isn't one anymore. That "gray" card is not neutral, it's slightly warm.

I have this feeling that the boxes are supposed to be replaced by some sort of matching coloured accessory... like a bag or something

myowndivinity said...

@Jonny Dade-- It's a grey card. In photography, they're used to maintain correct white balance. You take a test shot with the grey card, then, in post-processing, you set midtones to the card color.

Jonny Dade said...

Thanks 'myowndivinty' for clearing that up, it actually makes sense, unlike half the garbage on here (wide angle lenses?) So if i get this correctly, after getting the setup right, they should have taken a second picture without the card? So technically it's a photographer fail? i guess you could say 'Photograph Setup Disaster' - or abbreviated to PSD... where have i seen PSD before... oh and DOKA, have a nice day today!

Sil said...

My English is not good enough to explain what I undestand from this image, but I'll try: in some photos the girls are holding ENVELOPES because the site design includes a postage stamp, which I think has something to do with the free-shipping thing. A mail theme, if you will.
Or maybe it was just a crazy idea of mine.

Laurence said...

Ok, I think I figured out what's going on. That's not a photographer's grey card, and this is a PsD, sort of... but more of a lack-of-Photoshop disaster.

Go to the men's section by clicking "men" on the top bar. (I'd give you URLs for this, but they're using too much Flash.) You'll see a picture of some pants with a small inset in the top-right of a guy standing on one leg. Click on that to enlarge. He's holding the same card with "I am a Dawson fit" printed on in. You can also click on "Gavin fit" (top left) and you'll see a similar image of a different guy holding the same card with different text. (text in the exact same font is hovering in the air next to the guys, as evidence that it was "photoshopped" in)

So the "disaster" here is that someone forgot to add whatever text was supposed to be on those grey cards.

Rex said...

So the PSD is the grey card? I thought it was her waistline/belt.

Davidikus said...

This is so funny. So many bad things have happened with editors that I never send all the pictures (even when the contract says so) for fear of seeing the pic of my assistant wearing his/her own clothes seriously labeled as if they were the model wearing the designer's clothes.

And so forth!
