I don't even think that photo is supposed to be there. All the others prominently feature the product, but that photo doesn't have them in there at all.
Unlike many photos published here this, in my opinion, is not a disaster - merely a cropping/art direction issue. The ps artist has only photo shopped the necessary parts of the photo. The photo was meant to be cropped just above her head and on either side of the kids arms. This seems pretty obvious. Boat does look funny though.
mbrady> True enough. So then the other part of the disaster is that they forgot to 'shop in the product?
On the original site you can zoom in and see the bad work in full glory. You can also tell that the white box is in fact empty, and the base is folding in on itself!
@ Lunah No Lunah, not magically disappeared, cropped. Hint - Just crop the pics where his fingers aren't. The PS artist has made the fingers on his right hand "magically disappear" by photoshopping them out and he will make them "magically disappear" on his left hand by not including them in the crop. PS artists aren't going to waste time doing photoshop work that isn't meant to be included in the pic. Remember that a web person placed this pic, not the designer. Hopefully they wold have cropped out the empty box , as John and Heather pointed out.....
The only problem with the crop theory is that while it's a bad photograph as it is, that would leave even less chance to include the product shot.
Maybe rather than crop the sides, they were going to obliterate them with huge fake candles in the very close foreground, gazing past them to the happy family unit (with the disappearing father) in the background. And then the text would explain why, with bright sunlight streaming in through the windows, these wack-jobs felt the need to have battery-powered candles in the room.
I agree H&G. I t is a potential photoshop disaster - all photos are, but my point is, is that currently not a photoshop disaster. The art director would have given the PS artist the "live/print area" to work in and the artist would not have gone outside those parameteres - why do work on an area that theoretically won't be printed. Do that too many time and you'll get fired. If this is a photoshop disaster, then there are millions on photos on designers and art directors hard-drives that are also. This should be posted on "WebDudeDidntConsultDesignerBeforeUploadingPicDisaster.com"
If that's a cropping problem, hubby seems to have gotten his arms in the same place as the girl two posts back got her neck. Only his are different lengths.
And he can't have just been shifted out from behind the family, unless there's a new photo technology that makes an image of the whole face even when it's blocked by other people's faces.
Eilonwy...Sorry - I'm not being succinct. Lets assume, for a second, that the original pic is legit (dad, mum & 2 kids). Art director says to PS artist -
"get rid of the dad, but I am cropping the pic (left to right) - from the boys rignt arm to the right edge of the pic and (top to bottom) - just below the crown of the boys head to the beginning of the base of the white box, don't worry about the crappy base, or the rest of dad/fingers because it won't be in the final pic".
Crop the pic like this and there you have the pic that the art director wanted printed that is not a "photoshop disaster" - I have done it myself and it works. Hope that is clearer.

Thanks for turning my attention to this fuggly product, which I will not even touch with a stick, EVER.
The uploaded picture is bad, but probably more of an error (forgot to crop) or two (where is the product?) and general poor concept (why even use candles or substitutes in such a overly bright room?), than a PSD.
The bedreoom picture seems to have 10.000 Watts of lighting already, so what 'mood' can these fake candles convey anyway?
However in the 'wilderness' picture, the seem to have found the pattern of lights which grants contacts with UFOs. How else do you explain the flood light in their face? That's a kind of cool tip, for the daring. Which leads me to the conclusion that this must be done by a martian. Not bad.
Oh sure, blame the web coordinator. Let me tell you, if one of my designers had passed this crappy photo to me and told me to crop it so that only the woman and kids were in the photo, I would have just cropped it myself with Photoshop before placing it online. Since the designer was too lazy to do it for themselves. And there wouldn't have been a disaster.
Jimmy, if it's simply a cropping error, that's STILL the responsibility of the Photoshopper, and the fact that he DIDN'T do the cropping IS a disaster.
Hello, http://www.affiliategood.net/ We are running offers of four big company CPAProsperity, Axon Media Group, Broongads, EleadMedia on AffiliateGood.net and find out other company in the future. if you think our websites can promote your offers, please add your offers on AffiliateGood.net for free, We will help you display it at http://www.affiliategood.net/viewoffers.php Thank you
I find it hard to believe it can be qualified as a "cropping error". I followed Jimmy's instructions that were supposed to "work", using the high resolution image assembled using the interactive zoom function. This [link] is the problem area enlarged. How would you explain the hack job around the kid's face and the vertical line between the green paste-on and the grey background?
Jimmy invented a new "this-is-not-a-disaster"-reasoning. I didn't believe it could be done.
And what a brilliant one, far better than the wide angle lens.
I wanna apply retroactively: "This is not a disaster: the photo of the front-wheel missing plane was supposed to be cropped so that only the right wing would have been visible. Or a patch of sky. Unsibscriberizing."
Yea, it doesn't make sense. If the dad was in the picture in his entirety, this still would be called a photoshop disaster as there's no way the top of that head can reach his hands.
Angela - you said< "I would have just cropped it myself with Photoshop before placing it online. ......And there wouldn't have been a disaster.> I agree with you - this is all I amsaying. It is not necessarily a "photoshop disaster" - more of a cropping disaster. But surely you can't be completely excusing the web dude in this disaster - he must have uplaoded this with his eyes closed.
Photoshop can definitely do wonders- you can crop, style, rotate and enhance the quality of a photo. This picture is a great example of improper use of the Photoshop application. Fortunately, many web developers working for business websites are experts on Photoshop and GIMP applications in order to make the website livelier. I know a web designer (Toronto) who is trained to make photographs vivid, clean-looking, and coordinated for a website. Thankfully, I've found the right web development (Toronto) company to work on my website. Thanks for the post, hope to see more from your incredible blog!
Al - to be fair, this post isn't about " the hack job around the kid's face and the vertical line between the green paste-on and the grey background" - it was about the "disappearing husband". My cropping theory was to explain that, and to point out that the disaster wasn't as bad as it seemed, 'cause hubby was never mean't to be in the pic final. The only way you can explain "the hack job around the kids face" is really, really substandard photoshopping.
The children and woman love each other so much that they give presents to each other, but they hate the dad, and if they ignore him long enough, he will cease to exist. He is already started to cease to exist as the lower part of him has already vanished!

Their whole "gallery" is a wreck. Would it kill them to do some REAL product photography instead of editing in out-of-scale product into a stock photo?

The face, the hand on the right, the uncomfortable look to the bottom of the white box... It makes me so happy. :)
....Erased....from existence!
No wonder they look so happy - the boxes are filled with his insurance policies
There's more where this came from. Just browse the other "photos" on the product's page, it's like a gallery of little disasters.
ROFL!
My girlfriend can... ah, nevermind.

@Humberto: I really like the 3 lights on the boat... Reflections and physics don't mix. And her transparent leg. Totally awesome.

I don't even think that photo is supposed to be there. All the others prominently feature the product, but that photo doesn't have them in there at all.
I also like the boat picture... 2 people, 5 legs
It's like Back to the Future and his parents ended up not hooking up and he's disappearing out of the picture....

The title you gave this post made me laugh so freakin hard when i saw the picture...
@Jimmy
oh? So the man's hands that they left would have magically disappeared?
Hint: look on either side of the kids
NOT a PSD.
The man is obviously part-Cheshire Cat and has developed evaporating skills.

Sorry - I agree J&H (not H&J)
Okay, I surrender...I've got nothing.

Isn't dad's left arm too long?
Mom's neck/shoulder area is weird, too.
It's not just a PsD, it's a props disaster too. The box in her right hand is collapsing in on itself.
And speaking of cropping, is there any way to crop out the spammers?
This manufacturer is from Holland.. Isn't that fuuuuunny?
Actually it's not cropped.. They just had the munchies.
