Ann Taylor: Ann Failure

Ann Taylor PSD
Jezebel has a nice story on Ann Taylor's amazing bid to be the home of the most ridiculous retouching ever. Apparently besides retouching images with the finesse of a prison tattooist, the site managed to post both retouched and unretouched versions of the same images.

Smoooooooth... Wrinkles are bad yucky and get in the way of those continuous curves.

WV: RAMNESS - You thought it was all about ewe, didn't u?

She was hot before, now ugh... unnatural.

So, I'm sorry, what was unappealing about the original pic? I mean comely, nicely shaped, brunette? Yuck who'd want that?

operafantomet said...

Worst part is that I would be more likely to buy something based on that left picture than on the photoshopped right one...

Murilo Silva said...

I wonder, why put the two pics side by side? I can only imagine the people involved saying: "y'know, we suck at photoshop and y'know what? We don't care! And we don't give a damn about what other people think either, so screw them."

She's just inhaling in the first pic and exhaling in the second. Not a disaster.

Pigtown-Design said...

it's gross that you can see her upper ribcage in both pictures. that's not very attractive on anyone.

Jen said...

Doesn't the one on the left look kind of retouched too? It looks like part of her right side is missing. Either that or she's got the most mismatched breasts ever.

What in the gods was wrong with the first image? Shirts drape for fucks sake. I want to know how a shirt drapes before I buy it.

I'm not a wall and I'm not buying that ugly shade of pink as a paint coating.

marxmarv said...

@Pigtown-Design, might it just be the drape of the shirt and the lighting?

You know, I'm not even going to snark on this. Instead I'll express hope that this photo become a mandatory part of every school's health curriculum.

Disgruntled militant guerilla photoshoppers!

even the bigger version has a bony chest. why are bones sexy in America now? Ribs- pelvic bones, chest bones, collar bones... they make people drool.. i don't get it.

PoCoLoco said...

NOT a PSD!

The top on the right has a built-in tummy-control panel.

Donna said...

I guess the ones on the right are wrinkle-free jeans.

PoCoLoco said...

Not a PSD. There's a perfectly reasonable medical explanation for this before/after pic phenomenon.

MADD (Model Attention Deficient Disorder)
This is what happens when a model becomes bored in the course of a photoshoot. More than just her patience wears thin, her clothes wear thin too.

Why?? She looked great and appealing in the original. Now she looks more like a plastic doll.

I mean really, why retouch a pic like this at all??

dykewife said...

i'm at a loss as to why anyone felt the need to retouch the photo to begin with.

Mad Izatie said...

Another instance where the head is bigger than the waist.

Melencolia said...

I didn't know Gumby had a sister.

Miranda said...

Christ, she wasn't thin enough already?

thesuker said...

She's hot as she is... wtf would they mess around with her waist/torso?

Rai said...

The image has been replaced on the original site with an only *slightly* less disturbing photo.

Maybe the folks at Ann Taylor only higher models who have been in a involved in a taffy stretching incident gone horribly afoul. Those people need jobs too!

I never date women who lack ribcages. I'd get all nervous I might squish some important internal organ while hugging them.

Laura HH said...

She already looks too skinny in the untouched photo

Those jeans have too many wrinkles. OUR JEANS DO NOT HAVE WRINKLES. I SAID FIX IT!

Taura said...

on the website it says:
"Due to overwhelming popularity, this item is currently sold out."
maybe people got so excited about looking like a tube there was a rush.

Love that ironing! I need a really good iron.

Yet they left the neck and the strange contours of the breastbone. BTW, the first photo is perfect.

Gotham said...

she is too skinny if you ask me, looks like her ribs are coming out to haunt us, they could have taken a wel fed model at that?? there is nothing as much wrong in the picture as the over all attitude!

Cranky Old Batt said...

Lemme guess, the un-retouched version is the "plus size"?

pootpoot said...

If you ask me, she's still way too big in the right pic. You can't expect to sell clothes when you employ models that have the form factor of a cupboard even after you've photoshopped them. As a rule of thumb, a girl is too wide when her torso is bigger then her arm.

A clear illustration of what's changed can be found here.

Somehow my previous post got removed? Maybe it was marked as spam (which a lot of people on PSD seem to do)?
