Femina: Freaky Flatlander

No amount of drop shadow in the world could convince us this girl has ever experienced a 3rd dimension.

Thanks Astaroth. The following PSD is from the Swiss magazine Femina. When I originally looked at this PSD I thought the head neck region had some stretching and then Scooter chimed in and he thought the shadows was making it look awful. In your opinion what’s making this magazine cover look so bad?

think maybe it is a bad angle… she looks about as skinny as a cracker and has an over-sized head… the way they have her sitting is not very attractive for her tiny frame and long neck

her neck has no folds at all, which means it’s mounted on a hinge instead of turning like that of all humans.
maybe the head has been mounted from another shot, or her neck has been cleaned too much

It’s the collapse of civilization of course

  • Dan

It’s that horrible shade of yellow

I don’t like the extended arm neither the neck… the shadow looks only “amateurish” but not necessarily a disaster

They hired an alien from another planet and this is the output they got.

  • Anasta

I’m gonna start with the fact that she seems to have at least two elbows in that arm.

  • Bev

This is a weird one — I can’t put my finger on what’s wrong either!  Her hand looks odd to me, though it’s possible that it hasn’t been touched.  I’m going with her alien face/head, though I’m not sure if that’s Photoshop or genetics.

  • sfrench

The curve of her arm is definitely unnatural looking.

  • Waldobaby

Two things. Her head is warped like a fava bean and the art director is still in her emaciated heroin addict phase. This is a cold ugly woman.

edit: this PICTURE is cold and ugly, not the model. Whew!

  • Stella

Is that a shadow in her armpit or a badly placed design on her shirt?  If it is a shadow, it isn’t consistant with the triangular shadow of her arm on her leg (shadow starts at her elbow).  If they are both shadows, then the shadow ont he wall is on the wrong side of her body.

If the shadow on the wall is correct (and the other two shadowsI mentioned are just designs), then where is the shadow of her arm on her leg?  And why are the shadows on the wall different widths, which don’t seem to depend on how far away she is fromt he wall?  The shadows  for the skinny heels of her shoes (and maybe the one under her thighs) are too wide.

So, ya, I think the shadows are what make this picture odd-looking.  That and the hand coming out of her stomach, but that is probably bad posing/photography.

The upper body is too short + her neck and head are not attached to it.

Photographer: “The room is small,  can you get flat for a few moments please? thanks”

  • Synthprax

    Maybe it’s that baby-puke green/yellow?
The shadows on her body and on the wall have nothing to do with each other?
    She has hover-ass?
Something’s wrong with her levels/contrast, like when students convert RGB to CMYK without understanding color spaces?

She doesn’t appear to have any knuckles.  Her fingers are like rubbery sausages.

    • CragAntler

      Mmmmmmm….. sausages.

  • CragAntler

These Euro-trash models are all so shallow.

  • Wintertrees9

Wrong with the picture is that the model is normal weight woman that you fat Americans barely never IRL.

    • kirviinci

Way to be a complete and total dumbass.

  • teleromeo

That are very loooooong arms …

  • Murgatroyd

Her shadow on the wall “behind” her has reverse perspective — it’s smaller than she is! This isn’t physically possible given the illumination geometry.  The shadow of her head is below and to the left of her head; the shadow of her shoe is displaced to the left but isn’t lower than the shoe. Stupid mistake.

She would fall over with the support she hasn’t got under her
