Photoshop Quiz: Heine Anatomy

Over the last two weeks we’ve received the image below from a lot our readers and we’ve been debating here in the office as to whether it’s actually a disaster or not. I’d like for you to pay attention to the positioning of the models legs and to cast your vote as to whether this is a PSD or not.

-No reading the comments before you vote or looking at the votes already submitted.

I think they should have

Her right leg is too thin. Her left leg (the arched one) is much thicker and muscular and there’s no way her right leg is such a limp.

    • Rundes Nettes

Not only are the legs different sizes, but they can’t be attached where her hips are either.  They just don’t line up right.

    • Stella

And her legs don’t cast a shadow either (assuming the grayaish splotch is supposed to be the shadow of her dress)

  • Rayanvideo

If you fallow from her head down to her butt the direction is from right to left(left of photo). pay attention to the leg at the left side of photo. there is no easy way this leg can connect to the rest of the body.

  • Synthprax

    Those legs just kill me.

  • Trevegan

I don’t know, *And some people are going to take this the wrong way.. *sigh!*… But black women’s legs tend to be like that. Stocky on the thighs, and shapeless on the calves. (Look at Tina Turner’s legs). So it’s difficult to say one way or the other. Syaing that though, the left leg, (her left leg,) does look a bit action figure-esque!

Good thing CragAntler unsubscribered yesterday when he felt I stereotyped Germans, or he’d be complaining about you now.

      • Spillage!

Did you say they were sausage eating disciplinarians, with no sense of humour?

      • CragAntler

A whole day of lurking in the background was immensely unsatisfying.  Resubscribered.

  • Blog Ward

Not a PSD, she just has three legs and it’s just that the middle one is a bit large.

  • Tarene

Forget about the legs. What about those arms? Legs are weird, tough

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1297734061 Eduardo Basto

Is it just me or her right knee isn’t… err… right either?

  • http://twitter.com/TatianaAvdjiev Tatiana Avdjiev

Of course, it’s a PSD – look at the shadows. Her legs have no shadow, in addition to the weird-looking shape and impossible hips position.

  • SP

her right arm below the elbow is missing

  • http://rodatradar.blogspot.com/ ZealotZebra

Both arms are also disastrous. Part of the right one might be missing and her left is so thin and plastic it might as well be attached to a barbie doll.

  • Cropper

The dress looks like some sort of futuristic Sci Fi material that floats, swirls and shimmers while the person wears it. Cool!

  • http://twitter.com/SaurioLIF Saurio

Not a PSD disaster. Just an one legged model hiding an one legged torso less starving African child under her skirt.

  • Waldobaby

All this woman needs is a few cheeseburgers every day for a month or so. This is a pic of an anorexic.

  • Bev

Ummm, I can;t see any reason why this ISN’T a disaster!  Ol’ Thunder Thigh there is pretty obvious.  :)

    • http://vietdesigner.net/ VietDesigner.net

      Maybe you’re right :)

  • http://vietdesigner.net/ VietDesigner.net

    Her feet maybe have problem

  • Geroz

A clear case of hip displasia. Her left leg (on the right) leads to somewhere “in her middle” (if you know what I mean), while her right leg (in the left) is stretched straight upwards and leads … well … nowhere, actually.

  • Consumit

It’s very weird. Someone must be fired, but I don’t know who. The photoshop guy, the photographer, the model or whoever choosed that photo for publishing…

  • Cecilia

It’s not a good job, but not quite a disaster. More like an overly retouched picture of an overly starved woman.
Anatomy is deceitful, so the pose might be ‘natural’ as is. But arms were definitely slimmed down and apparently she’s half vampire, for there isn’t any shadow behind her legs.

  • Rfhurley

No Photoshop: se obviously received a leg transplant (perhaps two…).

  • jones19876

The legs are fine, the arms are a complete disaster tho.

Oh, and the dress that seems to have a life of its own; very pretty, but totally unrealistic.

  • Sammy

Comeon if the arms are retouched, then i think it should be very, very, likely that the legs were shopped.

  • André Paiva

The arms are a disaster. And the leg on the left ( the girl’s right leg ) is fake, aswell as the foot on the right ( girl’s left foot ). The girl’s real position is sideways.

  • Vern

The dress covers the left leg. It is correct. An optical illusion

    • Yeahno

      Yeah? No.

  • Domo_kin

There is no shadow for her feet or for where the dress goes over the leg.

Here’s a link  with less retouching. Can’t upload the image.  But who knows with these slim contortionist/models.

    • http://rodatradar.blogspot.com/ ZealotZebra

Neither could I. At that picture it seems like she has no hips. Maybe its possible.

Edit: Oh right, what they have done is taking a picture of her upper body when she’s turned to the side, and added that to a picture of her lower body when she’s standing more straight. Thats why it looks odd, but it might still technically be possible.

    • JD Liddil

That catalog is full of disasters

  • Chairman

If you look at it for 2 weeks and can’t tell, then by it rather obviously isn’t a “disaster”.  It may be wrong, but not so obviously wrong to deserve to be on PSD.

  • Jugstopper

I think it is horrible of you for making fun of a woman who has overcome her polio-related disability to become a model.

  • http://graphicstips.livejournal.com/ Alan G

Absolutely hilarious.  The legs are horrible, but there are so many disasters in the image, I don’t know where to start.  And is just me, but even without the mistakes, it would be an unappealing image?

  • Taimdala

Dear God, they removed her right thigh above the knee! Likely so as to hide the fact that they cut her off at the hips and shifted her entire hip-leg assembly down and to her right, so as to lengthen her torso. But seriously, if you’re going to remove THAT MUCH flesh off someone’s bones, couldn’t you at least try to make it look more natural? And more painterly? The transition between edge of right thigh and the background is so ham-handedly done it makes my eyeballs bleed. And as for realistic modeling of figure itself to suggest a rounded arm or leg? Bouguereau did it better.

  • Bargonzo

Her left leg is about two feet longer than her right leg. It might be entirely possible that she’s actually built like that…

  • Dre Damm it!

Maybe the photog should have taken the proper shot – Or maybe the client should have just lived with what they got and made it work. I think the worst offense is the absolute loss of detail in her face. She looks like a porcelain doll – which makes me wonder if the is an ad for a doll catalog; maybe the MUA messed up with that.(probably not though) I think the PS sucks, the model looks like she’s falling asleep, and production could have spent less time making sure the dress was so open so the photog could get the shot. The real culprit here is the whole industry not the PS person.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_FN4T27NPAP3DELSODEN3UDRJQQ AnnS

Definitely, something’s awry with her arms and her right leg (if not also her left). They’re way too thin. One could argue she’s just incredibly thin, but her legs don’t match, and her face is the face of a normally thin model rather than someone with a serious eating disorder. The way she appears, her left arm is just bones with skin. She’d have trouble performing normal tasks. Also, her dress is way too long (where will it be when it comes back down, assuming it does?), one of her thighs is gone, and her skin has been plasticized horribly. If this is the standard of beauty we’re all supposed to follow, we will all die of starvation. This makes Chinese foot binding look good. So in conclusion, major PSD fail. This woman should punish the perpetrator by stabbing them to death with her razor-sharp left arm.

This makes me laugh as live in Europe and received this catalog. I kept looking at this image with a titled head thinking “Something ain’t right here”.   I was thinking of sending it in but someone beat me to it!  LOVE this site!

  • CragAntler

I think the name of this website gets taken too seriously by many.  It’s marketing, dummies.  Come on, would you visit a website called “Photoshop FLAWS”?  I like making fun of the obvious “disasters,” but as a Photoshop user myself, I also like the challenge of figuring out “what’s wrong with this image?”  It actually makes me better at Photoshop.  Plus, it’s the subtle “disasters” that make the obvious ones that much more funny and entertaining to poke fun at.

  • Murgatroyd

If you go to the page that Lightstriker referenced
    (http://www.domamod.ru/catalogues/heine_116/modnaya-zhenskaya-odezhda-ot-heine-vesna-leto-2012/#detail),
copy that image of the same model in a different pose, and overlay that
image onto this one, you’ll see that the legs and most of the dress are
    absolutely identical. It looks as
though the entire “photograph” is constructed of separate components:
her dress, her legs, her body above the waist, and probably her arms and
even her face are all separate layers. She’s the Patchwork Girl!
