Marzo 2012: Prosthetic Paste

Things were looking up for Wikus van der Merwe ever since the District 9 prawns made good on their word and restored his body back to human form.  Mostly.

The left hand is without question a “quick and dirty” cut-n-paste job with no time at all spent on smoothing edges for a more realistic look.  Why is anyone’s guess.  Mine is that the GA began having seizures from overexposure to the copious amounts of magenta in this image, and simply had to bail out for the sanity’s sake.

Thanks Raymon. You can see the original on the 2012 Telecinco calendar.

If I were to guess, I’d say the hand was originally flat and facing right, and would have been off the side the way they wanted to put the guy, but that doesn’t explain the crappy chop job of trying to “fix” it.  Weird.

This seems like the most likely reason. Seems like no one bothered to tell the photographer what the final dimensions of the photo would be. It was either crop off his hand or improvise. Personally I’d have used one of the 50 other photos the photographer likely took.

Or just shrink the photo a little bit so the hand fits in. Now if what you really need to work about is the proportions of the photo, then you should have added or subtracted a bit of background above and below the model to make it work. But breaking off his hand and twisting it around to meet your needs? That ‘s just cruel.

Der rechte Arm hat 3 Gelenke – das ist more obvious :-)

Looks more like it’s severed somewhere in the sleeve.

Im not sure the hand was pasted… as a professional photographer and retoucher, I’d say the perspective looks right…

BUT… the background was retouched and the color has been changed (even then pants looks like color retouched), it was also probably got darken. And there cames the problem…

When you have a color backdrop, its color invades all around, and it gets into the skin and clothes, if you retouch the background you should add some of that influence in the edges, and sometimes almost all. I cant see any invasion of color in his face, and nothing in his hand even it is right ON the backdrop… specially the shadows of his hand should look more magenta all around… if you want to try it, just download the image, add a layer set up in “color mode”, paint with the backdrop color a little around, and darken a little the hand… it will show much better.

As a professional photographer, retoucher, art critic, and moon astronaut, I say his hand looks perfectly normal, given that an elephant just stomped on it. And broke his wrist in the process, too…

      I agree, background change.

I asked you to iron his sleeves a bit, not his hand !

A rubber hand right???  He does not have a second real hand so they went to rubber???

Kudos to this model for soldiering on even after that freak steamroller accident.  Seriously, you guys.  He’s a hero.

    “Thing” snuck into the photo

For those of us who do a lot of photo work, certainly a disaster (I know I was like WTF with that left hand), but those who don’t do any photo work (aka general public) are going to notice anything. So I wonder if it merits the moniker disaster or mistake.

I think they were expecting that their target audience would not be looking at his hand.

At least the shodows look better than we normally see.

If I’d have seen this somewhere besides PsD I would not have even noticed if he HAD any hands.  Or anything else below those eyes and smirky smile.

Right Hand by Mother Nature.  Left Hand by Pixar.

If you magnify the photo it appears the hand isn’t attached to his wrist.

  • Jazhara7

It’ actually possible to hold your hand like that, and going by the position his thumb (If  you twist your hand like that, put it flat and maybe even put pressure on it, you will automatically curve your thumb, because stretching it is extremely uncomfortable in that position) is there, it actually is likely this is not copy-pasted. However, I think someone might have retouched the left edge of his left hand too much, taking away too much of the wrist. Still, this doesn’t look like a copy-paste, just an awkward looking, but still natural position.

That is my face right there and I agree that is a shitty job! The hand can be the one called “the thing” and what the hell happened to my face!
