Quiz: Vogue: Funky Elbow?

Over the last week a lot of our readers have sent in the following cover from Vogue claiming the art department removed her elbow. We’d like to get your thoughts on what happened here. Did they remove her elbow or is this just the camera angle?

Tip: Try and do the pose in the mirror.

That’s the most baroque anatomy ever. Left arm in the air, right hand sticking out from behind the back of her head with no arm attached.

It’s a perfectly normal shot. Taken with a long lens so that perspective is compressed. If you do the “mirror test”, try it 20 feet from the mirror before deciding if it’s real or fake.

    • OurJames

A long lens would actually make her arm more likely to show. A wide-angle lens would make her head larger relative to her arm.

Normal. I tried it in front of the mirror. but they removed the skin fold from her neck.

Her elbow it by her side. They just added a hand. I think from the Addams Family.

  • Cropper

I think that you could hide an arm behind that big head

  • kama

Wait… Her left shoulder is forward… that arm is raised. She must be holding that arm straight out, since it’s her RIGHT hand by her ear. It’s possible, I tried – but… it’s not comfy, and it results in a seriously awkward looking photo. They clearly shopped out neck folds, and I think they might have shaved what you can see of her arm down a bit, as I couldn’t achieve that angle of arm-meets-hand-stuck-to-ear.

Doesn’t matter if it’s a PS disaster or poorly chosen camera angle – if you have to wonder about things like that and if something jumps out of the picture like that “missing” elbow it simply means it’s not a good picture.

Yes. There also should be a third voting choice saying it has NOT been removed and does NOT look totally fine. It’s a poor survey that rigs the possible outcomes.

  • Tomecko

It’s possible to pose that way, but an awkward and poorly chosen shot. And at the angle her wrist comes out from behind her ear, I think it’s entirely likely that some arm/elbow was showing, and was removed.

  • hockeychick

I tried and my elbow kind of stuck out above my head. If she had a little more wrist showing, maybe, but they probably removed it so the pic wouldn’t look sloppy.

  • luckysnags

    It’s a pony-tail that bears a strong resemblance to a hand.

  • OurJames

I can’t do that and make my arm disappear completely behind my head. But I’m not as limber as I used to be….

  • Sarah P.

Looks like she has a hand growing out of her head. Creepy.

  • JarFil

It’s perfectly possible to capture that pose without the need of photoshopping. Now, why would anybody in their right mind choose to use that particular shot, is what baffles me.

I could do the pose uncomfortably and my arms are shorter than models, but I’m betting that the elbow wasn’t removed, but that part of her forearm was coming out of her head behind the VO in Vogue. I’m guessing they removed it so that the text popped more or something and missed the awkward floating hand aftermath.

  • Bev

I can do the pose in a mirror, but I agree with those who said that if we have to ASK if it’s been Photoshopped, it’s not a good picture. That hand looks disconnected and weird, no matter what!

  • gianni

I tried it too and my elbow stuck out over my head. But, notice the top of her head is cropped out. But the angle of her wrist is a dead giveaway. Her elbow in that angle would be sticking out horizontally to the left of her head. Photoshop!

  • B-Con

Maybe the elbow wasn’t removed, but it looks like the forearm was. How could the arm go out from the torso at that angle, and then re-enter from the top of her head like that?

What? So she has a itch on her neck.

  • Celia

I did the pose and can get my elbow behind my head, but the main reason the photo looks weird in my opinion is because of her left arm in the foreground, makes it look like it should be her left hand but it’s somehow got disconnected. Until you look closely and realise the hand is her right one.

Takes a second to notice exactly what’s wrong, but it is extremely creepy.

  • aubrey

not photoshop, just badly placed hand double by the looks of this mishap… when will they learn?

  • http://www.imjustcreative.com imjustcreative

That is her right hand behind her head which you can tell from the placement of the fingers, specifically the litter finger. Try doing that with your left hand and getting your little finger on that side.
