Quiz: Thumbs up for the first born

It’s important to cradle a newborns head, but daddy dearest’s thumb appears to be this baby’s first limb-related disaster. What say you, readers? Inappropriate time for a (Photoshop-related) hand job, or a simple matter of awkward perspective?

If this was only a matter of bad perspective, his fist would have to be at least semi-clenched (since no fingers, other than thumb, are visible), which would be really bad for the baby. So, I think — or hope? — it’s a matter of bad Photoshop.

Agreed. The only way to get the thumb at that angle is to have it overlapping the palm, which means the fingers would naturally extend directly upward over the baby’s head. Unless, as you said, the fingers were clenched, but that seems incredibly awkward and not at all a good way to hold a baby. I think the thumb is actually natural, but the remaining fingers were removed from above the baby’s head for neatness.

Something went wrong, as suggested by the blurred, confused mess at the very bottom of the image.

you can see the very slightest bit of baby’s fingers at the bottom of the picture. it’s def awkward angle syndrome, not photoshopping. :)

I think the choice should be: a) a Photoshop disaster; b) the father’s hand truly is deformed.
I can’t find any angle from which a normal thumb looks like that without positing a fourth dimension.

The size of that thumb is second only to its shape in photoshop disaster.

Nah… this is a really awkward perspective.

I’m a father and this is a familiar hand’s position to me. Obviously it’s just an awkward perspective.

  • Sam

If you look his palm is actually under her cheek And back of her shoulders which would put his fingers on the other side of her head where you can’t see them… It’s awkward perspective

It’s an awkward perspective, because he isn’t the one holding the baby. There is someone else just to the left of the frame, holding up the baby, probably with both hands – right hand under the head, left hand under the bottom. Pique is just kissing the baby, not holding it.

I’ve tried bending my thumb like that and cannot get anything like the angle the first joint has without my thumb crossing the palm of my hand… I can’t see how it’s possible.

Awkward perspective and an awkward looking thumb. That guy needs to shave that scruff before he causes skin damage to that child.
